Tom was in a car accident in 1983, he suffered several injuries, such as internal bleeding and damage, broken bones, loss of vision in right eye to the most serve brain trauma. Tom was not expected to live through the night and if he did the opportunity to walk and talk again were doubtful. Tom survived through the night but slipped into a coma with a very unknown future. Tom slowly began movement and recognizing family members after three challenging months.
Tom and his family began the uncertain journey towards recovery. Tom lost over
60 pounds and had to relearn all motor skills from feeding himself to attempting
to walk. After several months in the hospital Tom was admitted to a
rehabilitation center. He was determined to improve and be able to walk and
talk before his release. After three months he proudly walked (behind a wheelchair) and left the rehab center, returning home to experience his new life.
Tom and his family faced years of frustration because of Tom's disabilities due to the challenges that face individuals who do not completely fit in to today's fast pace world. Tom's challenges were lack of confidence, short term memory, speech, limited vision, writing, balance, logic and judgment, and "grammas" seizures. Tom has experienced great success while working at InRETURN. With the programs at InRETURN, Tom has shown vast improvement in almost all areas especially his self-confidence. In 2007, Tom gained his independence with own one bedroom apartment.
